Strategic Network Hardware Fund

Past surveys and interactions with libraries have shown that there are upgrades required in many of their facilities that would support better connectivity for staff and patrons. These include, but are not limited to, things like wifi access points and routers. This one time fund, which dispenses funds supplied by the Libraries Branch of the Ministry of Education, will allow libraries to apply for funds to purchase such hardware improvements that specifically support improved network access.

AMENDMENT TO ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA (December 9, 2020) – Based on feedback from libraries, this fund has been further expanded to include “network services” in addition to hardware. So this might include things like re-cabling of a branch or other installation fees, or potentially things like network or security audits. Please do contact scott.leslie@bc.libraries.coop with questions and further clarifications, and PLEASE keep in mind that the Co-op is also funding a Connectivity Consultant to work with BC public libraries for free through until the end of 2021.

UPDATE October 31 2021: The calls for applications to public libraries in BC closed October 31, 2021 . Adjudication for the final rounds happened on an ongoing basis, the results of what was funded can be seen at Successful Grantees to Date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I apply for funds to upgrade computers for patron or staff access?

A: No, these funds are NOT intended to be used for laptops or desktops aimed at public or staff computing.

Q: If I have already used funds from the one-time 2020 Library Technology Grant to improve my networking infrastructure, can I still apply for this grant?

A: If the direct grant from the branch has already been reported on, then we can not grant funds a second time for the same devices.

Q: When are applications due by?

A: In May 2021 the Co-op announced the lifting of the previous cap to this fund, and as such, needs to adjudicate all applications at the same time. The new deadline for applications is June 30, 2021.

Q: When must the money be spent by?

A: Funds will be awarded until the fund is exhausted, however funds need to be spent in (Co-op’s) fiscal year they are awarded. The Co-op’s fiscal year runs April 1-March 31.

Q: Am I able to apply this grant money to subsidize my monthly internet connectivity fees?

A: No, these funds are specifically for capital expenditures. A second “Connectivity Supplement” fund is being released at the same time to help libraries improve their connectivity and offset increased costs and should be used instead.

Q: Who should I contact if I have further questions about this fund or the process?

A: Questions can be directed to scott.leslie@bc.libraries.coop
